How did you start working remotely?

7 years ago, I took a trip to Mexico with some friends and got exposed to the digital nomad lifestyle firsthand. The friends I was hanging out with were working in the mornings from a trendy cafe, taking a surf break mid-day, and continuing their day in a co-working environment.

Being that I was studying marketing, when I returned from my trip I started looking for remote marketing jobs. I got my first interview through an application I completed from a Facebook ad.

During the phone interview, I was really honest and transparent about my skills and outlined that a location-independent life was really important to me, and I was willing to work hard and learn about social media marketing to sustain this. They paid me a whopping $10.00 an hour, although they did offer me training.
