In this series, we will be highlighting real, successful remote workers working in various industries across the globe. They'll give us an insight into how they got started in their industry, their advice to their younger selves, and tell us why they chose remote work.

How did you start working remotely?

I first started working as a Virtual Assistant for coaches, then slowly and organically fell into coaching myself because I love nothing more than to talk to and inspire people!

What made you choose your current field, and what do you love about it?

I have been traveling intermittently for 7 years (2 years full time) and started to work online so I could sustain myself abroad. I LOVE the freedom that being a digital nomad provides me in my life, and I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing than empowering other people to access the same freedom and abundance lifestyle too!

What has been the highlight of your remote career so far?

Oh wow, my entire life feels like a highlight, but I would have to say the people I’ve met along my travels and through the remote work world on the interwebs, seeing my clients grow and gain the confidence to pursue the life they want and deserve, and moments where I am swinging in a hammock on the beach working and I look out to the ocean and realize how much I love my life!

What are some of the challenges you faced?

Imposter syndrome, overwhelm, limiting beliefs, FOMO, no wifi 😂

How did you stay motivated when facing these challenges?

I always come back to my WHY. Why do I want what I want? How do I want to feel? What steps can I take to get there? And then do those things knowing they are so aligned with my core values that I can’t go wrong. Change is the only constant. Choosing to believe that everything is rigged in my favor. Reach out to friends in the digital nomad community!

What is your opinion of remote work? Benefits vs disadvantages?

My opinion of remote work is that it is literally the way of the future. Complete location independence. Freedom of time. More empowerment. A better work-life balance. The disadvantages may be that if you’re not careful, you may end up working MORE hours than in a traditional job, and it takes a lot of self-discipline to work when nobody is holding you accountable.

Sometimes non-remote workers don’t understand why I’m staring at my laptop so much and it looks like I’m not getting anything done - but there are a lot of moving parts to running a successful business so sometimes that’s hard to explain! The benefits definitely outweigh the disadvantages for me, because I know so clearly what I want and it’s the lifestyle that allows me to have all of those things!

If you could advise a younger version of yourself to do something different - what would it be?

To pay attention to my intuition. Prioritize what I wanted, not what I thought I should do. Follow through on my dreams. Stop taking on other people’s energy or listening to their opinions unless they’re in the shoes you want to be in. Work smarter, not harder, and don’t forget to make time for fun too. Drop perfection. Time is an illusion. You are not your mind.

You have the power - don’t give it away.

What do you predict for the future of your industry?

I believe the travel industry is going to look different, but the digital nomad lifestyle is going to BOOM with the pandemic showing the world how much of our careers CAN be done online and also giving people a chance to take a hard look at what they really wanted in life. I think a lot of people are going to want to be working online full time now, and when it’s safe and available to do so, to start traveling and taking their laptops with them!

What would you like to achieve professionally in the next five years?

In 5 years I will have 4 streams of passive income on top of my main business focus. I will have had 100 people successfully take my Purpose and Passports Digital Nomad course that are now living their dream laptop lifestyle all around the world!

Any words of wisdom for people looking to get hired in your industry?

Regardless of the industry, my advice would be - JUST GO FOR IT! I am a recovering perfectionist and overthinker. You will never be 100% ready. Ready is a LIE! Clarity comes from taking ACTION, and things very much work out and fall into place along the way. Work backwards. Decide on your goal, and then reverse it to see what all of the things are that you need to do from your starting point to get you there.

Break those goals into even tinier micro goals so you can do one thing per day and know that every single day you are taking a step in the direction of your dreams!

Any predictions for what will happen to remote work as a whole?

The percentage of people working remotely is going to skyrocket for sure!

Final question, what is your go-to recommendation for others to read/listen to/watch right now?

Angie Lee is my spirit animal. Gary Vee. Brene Brown. Payday with Ray Ray. TED Talks on YouTube!
